訳：Ｇ・グリフィン神父 大きなことを成し遂げるために力が欲しいと神に求めたのに 謙遜を学ぶようにと弱さを授かった より偉大なことが出来るように健康を求めたのに より良きことが出来るようにと病弱を与えられた 幸せになろうとして富を求めたのに 賢明であるようにと貧困を授かった 世の人々の賞賛を得ようと成功を求めたのに 得意にならないようにと失敗を授かった 人生を享楽しようとあらゆるものを求めたのに あらゆることを喜べるようにと生命を授かった 求めたものは一つとして与えられなかったが 願いは全て聞き届けられた 神の意に沿わぬものであるにもかかわらず 心の中の言い表せないものは全て叶えられた 私はあらゆる人の中でもっとも豊かに祝福されたのだ I asked for strength that I might achieve; I was made weak that I might learn humbly to obey. I asked for health that I might do greater things; I was given infirmity that I might do better things. I asked for riches that I might be happy; I was given poverty that I might be wise. I asked for power that I might have the praise of men; I was given weakness that I might feel the need of God. I asked for all things that I might enjoy life; I was given life that I might enjoy all things. I got nothing that I had asked for, but everything that I had hoped for. Almost despite myself my unspoken prayers were answered; I am among all men, most richly blessed.
